How your Mattress Warranty Works

A warranty is in place to cover manufacturing defects, or if something structurally goes wrong during normal use while using a proper foundation and bed frame with a center support.

One of the most common questions asked about mattress warranties is, “What exactly is a mattress warranty for?”

Intuitively, you would think, “It’s a mattress.  What could possibly go wrong?”

And the answer is…not a whole lot, really.  But, once in a blue moon something does go wrong.  That’s where the warranty comes in.

Before we go to what a mattress warranty does cover, we will firstly check what they don’t cover.

  • A mattress warranty does not guarantee that you will “like” the mattress
  • It does not guarantee that you will still think it is comfortable in 5 years to come
  • It does not cover damage caused by jumping on the mattress, or damage caused by moving

For example, you get a new mattress and a month later, it is sinking 3 inches in the middle of the bed.  You’re using the matching foundation and you have a proper bed frame, but for some reason the mattress have collapsed.  In this situation, the mattress is most likely to be determined to be defective, and the manufacturer would typically replace it.

Or, let’s say after having your mattress for a year, a spring pops out.  (Highly unlikely…but anything is possible.)  They would surely replace it.

So, typical issues warranties covers include:

  • Seams coming apart
  • Sagging greater than the manufacturers allowable amount
  • Structural failure (i.e. a coil malfunctions or pops out of the bed)

Mattress warranties are typically a combination of non-prorated and prorated terms.  So, in a hypothetical 5-years limited warranty example, the first 1-year might be non-prorated, and the next 4 years prorated.  During the first 1 year, you wouldn’t have to pay anything out of pocket if your mattress were defective.  After the first year, you would have to pay a percentage to have it replaced any time during the next 4 years, with the percentage increasing each additional year until the 5th year.

One thing to keep in mind is that the way mattress warranties work, is that if the mattress gets stained or soiled in any way, the warranty is voided.  So, if you spill a cup of coffee on your bed and it stains your mattress, the warranty is now voided.  This is because of health issues related to bedding and the way the laws work.  It’s completely ridiculous, but it’s how the manufacturers have been able to set them up.

This is why it’s critical that you protect your mattress from the very beginning with a stain-proof mattress protector.  A good protector will not only protect your mattress warranty, but it will prevent mold, mildew, dust mites and other allergens.
