10 Biggest Design Mistakes New Homeowners Make

The new home construction or overhauling of an old home project can be of any scale and budget. However, the design needs to be perfect! This implies that the design should not only be in sync with the homeowner’s requirements but must also be practical. The various design elements such as painting, furniture, interior decor, size and shape of rooms, backyard, patio, etc. all contribute to the overall design of the home. Thus, a mistake in any one aspect of the design could end up harming the design of the house.

There are many major design mistakes that are commonly committed by homeowners. And the ten biggest design mistakes have been discussed here.

1. Painting Before Purchasing Furniture

Painting the walls of various rooms before purchasing any furniture is a common design mistake committed by homeowners. Why? The wall colors must complement the furnishing in the room. Thus, it is wiser to choose a wall color that matches well with the furnishing rather than looking for furniture which complements the wall color. Therefore, before painting your house, which could also require a painting contract and choosing the colors, it is essential first to choose the furniture.

2. Ignoring the Functionality of the Rooms

While designing a room, it is essential first to determine how the room is going to be utilized. This enables you to understand the amount of space you need and other design features which prevent the room from appearing stuffy and messy. Designing the rooms by ignoring their particular functionalities is a mistake that must be avoided.

3. Lack of Measurements

The common mistake homeowners commit is to purchase any home decor items, especially furniture, without measuring the space where they will be kept. Thus, it is imperative to measure any and every piece and compare the measurements with the space available. The interior decor could possibly be damaged due to a mismatch in measurements.

4. No Sufficient Room Brightness

Ignoring the importance of adequate light in the room is a big design mistake that must be avoided. In order to ensure good natural lighting in the room, there must be enough windows and ventilation. Small windows and vents to allow extra light to filter into the room is also a good idea. When it comes to artificial lighting, there must be multiple lighting fixtures to brighten up the room. However, too many light sources must be avoided.

5. Overmatching and Overcontrasting Decors

The items in a room should not be overmatched in terms of style and color. Even though matching pieces impart cohesiveness to the room, overmatching causes the room to appear dull. Thus, there should be some contrast to impart a personality to the room.

Similarly, it is a mistake to have all contrasting pieces in one room. The complete absence of matching could spoil the aesthetics of the room. Thus, it is essential to strike a balance between matching and contrasting pieces.

6. Too Many Accessories In The Room

Adding too many decorative pieces and other items in the room hide other design elements since they catch all the attention. Replacing big decorative items such as sculptures with useful items is a suitable way of putting the available space to good use.

7. Furniture Of Same Height And Size

It is essential to place furniture pieces of different heights and sizes in the room. They should also be elevated in different ways. The furniture pieces of multiple heights and sizes enhance the aesthetics of the room while that of the same height and size makes the room dull and boring. The best course of action is to purchase various furniture pieces from different stores.

8. Excess Storage Spaces

Storage spaces are important, especially in houses with limited space. However, it is essential not to go overboard with respect to storage spaces in the rooms. The storage should be enough to avoid clutter in the house with some extra space to spare. But converting whole walls of rooms into wardrobes or hiding them behind chests of drawers and shelves is not a good design idea. Houses with excess storage spaces look more like attics and warehouses than homes for families.

9. High Placement of Artwork

Artworks hung in the rooms reflect the style and personality of the homeowner. You can spend money on expensive artworks to complement the interior decor, but hanging them too high is a significant design mistake that defeats the very purpose of including artwork in the interior decoration. The artwork should be placed near the furniture and should be 8 to 10 inches above the furniture. This simple rule prevents any design mistake with respect to the artwork.

10. Wrong Labor Company

During this phase, an association with the labor group is essential. This might require you to get a Labor Agreement. The Labour Agreement should not be done in a haphazard manner. It is necessary to gather information about reputed labor companies, check the projects completed by them, and get a clear idea of the quality of materials and the type of laborers deployed by them. It is also essential to hire only a certified company.
