5 Important Tips for Creating a Beautiful Backyard Patio

Creating a beautiful backyard patio is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding and fun projects you can ever do. Not only does it complement your backyard space, but it also provides you with an area for you to relax, have fun, and enjoy nature, fresh air, and any other outdoor features you like along with your friends and family.

Moreover, a patio is an extension of your house. It makes the outdoors feel more like the indoors, only with a little more tranquility, a sense of extra freedom, and fun. That said, here are some of the most important tips to help you establish a beautiful backyard patio.

Begin with finding the perfect location and space for your patio

The first thing you should think about is the amount of space you want for your patio. Of course, you should consider the space you already have, and how you can use it effectively. However, if space appears to be too small, you should think of ways to expand. For instance, a comfortable entertainment patio should be at least 550 square feet. If your patio is just for relaxing or for formal purposes, a space of 25 sq. ft. per person should be sufficient.

You may need to do some little construction work to add more space with extra pavements. Just remember that if you are going to use concrete, you will need rebar reinforcement steel to prevent crack formation on your pavements or pillars. Thus, it is very helpful to own some rebar cutting and bending tools for the construction work.

Furthermore, ensure that the location you choose has enough shade and good drainage.

Decide on the theme

What mood do you want to set for your patio? Do you want it to be formal, casual, serene, or fun? Your design, surrounding landscape, or even the location should determine the theme. For instance, if you want to set a fun theme, you should consider having your patio near the pool or any other playset material. If you want a formal setting, you should aim to create a place that is calm and not too distractive. A serene theme should bring out a sense of peace and a feeling of reflection. A casual setting should be a place where people can hang out or mingle, which means that you may want to add some form of entertainment.

Decorate accordingly

You will need to employ your creative side and uniqueness here. Your patio will only be as beautiful as you like it. Sometimes, someone else’s version of beauty might not be to your liking. Thus, it is great to have your own unique and personal style.

Start with the color around your patio. Most people like to match their patio color with that of their home; some prefer earth-toned color schemes whereas others prefer an artificial setting.

Choose the material for building your patio wisely. I would recommend that you go for long-lasting and low-maintenance materials. For example, bluestone is very attractive, and it never fades. Get flowers and plants to add to the aesthetic appeal of your patio. Decorate with any other material that you have in mind.

Secure the right kind of furniture

The furniture that you choose will depend on the theme that you want. As you can imagine, a fun-themed patio furniture won’t be the same as a formal-themed patio.

However, always remember to focus on durability. You need hardy furniture that will survive the outdoor environment for years. Also, consider the fact that something that may be trending now may not be appealing in the future. I would recommend that you go for classic furniture that will still look attractive for years.

Lighting and source of heat

Choose a stylish lighting pattern for your patio. For instance, landscape lighting and uplighting can go well with any theme. Uplighting and landscape lighting involves installing lights on a slightly higher area, like on a tree or a plant nearby. This helps to enhance the amount of light you get during the night. Low placed lights can be easily shaded, thus hindering visibility at night.

Also, remember to include a fire pit in your patio for cold nights. You can either install one permanently or buy a portable fire pit. Just remember to place your fire pit at a lower position to maximize the heat source and the comfort level.

You can also decide to build a heated patio if you don’t like the fire pits and fireplaces.
